Questions & Scripture References for Identifying Lies

What am I feeling?

  1. Label the emotion(s).

  2. What is it telling you?

    1. Information from the feeling

  3. Is it true?

  4. How do I know?


Facts are not feelings.


What am I thinking?

  1. Write down your thoughts.

    1. All of them about this situation.

  2. Is the thought true?

  3. What proof do I need?

  4. Do I have the proof?


Partial truths are still a lie.


What am I doing? (behavior)

  1. What is my reaction to the thought(s)?

  2. Does my behavior support truth?

    1. How so?

  3. Am I behaving to protect my feelings and thoughts that are lies?

  4. What can I do instead?


New behaviors for new lifestyle.


Read these passages to maintain discernment:

  • Take thoughts captive to Jesus (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

  • Renew your minds (Romans 12:2)

  • Put on the armor of God (Ephesians 6)

  • Concentrate on the good things (Philippians 4)

  • Encouragement to act in behavior that brings new life (James 2:14-26)


Next Steps:

  1. Write down the new thoughts from disputing the old ones, contrasting with the original thoughts and feelings.

  2. Write the truth below and state the behavior you will implement to live the truth.

  3. Sometimes we need another person to help us walk through and learn this process to practice implementing with their feedback.
